Fireproof -the movie

Last weekend several members of the Spirit Class went to see the movie Fireproof. This movie was made by the same group that made Facing the Giants. The film's message was centered around the sacredness of marriage as well as one's personal relationship with Jesus Christ. This movie is a Must See!! I encourage everyone to go see it this weekend. Take a friend that is currently not in church!! Click on the video to watch the movie trailer.

Heading Home!!!

We have had such a wonderful week but it will be great to come home to our families and friends. On Thursday Todd and Wayne took 15 generators to two locations in Texas, Vidor and La Port on Galvaston Bay. That was a 10 hour round trip. The rest of the group loaded a second trailer headed for the Republic of Georgia with 1350 health, layette, and bedding kits. We also unloaded a trailer of flood buckets that were donated from the Holston Conference. We then loaded a trailer with 500 hundred flood buckets headed for Dulac and Houma. We have finally gotten to a location with better internet connections so we are going to try and attach a couple of pictures.

We will see you all soon!

Tuesday and Wednesday

First of all we want to send our prayers and condolences to the Simmons family in the loss of our friend Steve. Barbara and Cary left Sager Brown Tuesday morning back en route to NC to attend the funeral. We hate that we will miss the service. He will be greatly missed.

Tuesday started with the loading of a container headed for the Republic of Georgia with emergency supplies. We loaded 1250 health kits, layette kits, sewing kits, and school kits. From there we made two trips with 500 flood buckets and 500 health kits each to Morgan City and Houma. We also worked in the Depot and began construction of an office for the facilities manager. That night after dinner we went back to the cemetery and continued work on the downed trees. We worked as long as we could bear the giant mosquitoes. Then to top it off the alternator went out on the truck we were driving.

Wednesday started with loading more flood buckets and health kits headed for Abbeville and Bell City. 1000 of each went to Bell City and 500 of each went to Abbeville. We also worked again in the Depot and some supply organization and construction on the office.

We apologize about the lack of blogs we have had problems with Internet connections, we can't wait to get back and share the pictures with everyone so you can see the blessings we have experienced.

In Christ's love,
UMCOR team

Monday 9-15-2008

Wow, what an eventful day!!! The men worked today on preparing boards for all of the windows on campus. We have covered 25 so far, thank goodness for Clyde, and will complete the job tomorrow afternoon. Everyone seems to be overwhelmed by the resent storms. A lot of small jobs have been put to the back burner due to all the major issues. David Annas worked as a maintenance man installing light bulbs, putting down carpet strips, and replacing door locks. The men were pulled of their carpentry work after lunch when one of the cafeteria workers discovered a major water leak. We dug the trench around the water line so the plumber could do the repair quicker. The women spent their day sewing bags and cutting fabric in the UMCOR depot. Tomorrow we all will load a container going to the Republic of Georgia. Todd, Clyde, Wally, David and Ritch went into Franklin after dinner and spent some time cutting and clearing trees from a cemetery. We met a public works department worker, Calvin, who was very grateful. He said he would pass this good deed along to the mayor and his church, saying, "how hard the NC mountain boys have worked".

Arrival-Sunday Sept. 14th

We have arrived safely to Sager Brown although we had to make a detour due to local flooding. We were able to spend a couple of hours in New Orleans where we witnessed buildings and homes still recovering from Hurricane Katrina. It is amazing that after three years there is still a lot of work to be done. Now the area has faced Gustav and a little by Ike. It is evident that downtown hasn't fully recovered. The crowds were minimal and several stores were still boarded up. We ate at the Market Cafe near the French Quarter.
Now about Sager Brown.....We have a nice place to stay enough room for everyone. This week we will be able to load TWO containers going to the Republic of Georgia. This is very exciting since only 8 containers have been sent this year. Monday's first job will be making plywood covers for the remainder of the windows so the property will be prepared for the next hurricane. There are also several trees down on the campus. The only negative so far is the smell when you walk outside due to the rising bayou. The storm surge caused the oxygen level to drop in the water which in turn is killing a lot of fish. Along the banks the dead fish are coming to shore and rotting.
Everyone says hello...Please keep us in your prayers.

On The Road to Sager Brown

We just wanted to drop a quick line and let everyone know that we are safe. We are currently on the road about to enter Mobile, AL. We found out that Sager Brown is up and running with power and absent any major flooding today we should be fine to arrive tomorrow. We are all anxious to get started to work. We will send some more information and pictures later when we have a better internet connection.

Ready to go

Our final plans have been made and we are preparing to leave on Saturday morning at 7:00am. Our group, David and Debby Annas, Ritch Bolick, Clyde Trivette, Wally Mitchum, and Todd King are very excited about this opportunity. We will update this blog daily and we hope you will follow along with us throughout our week.

We are thankful for the support of our church. This trip would not be possible without it.

Unfortunately, Steve Simmons and Lamont Krimminger will not be able to attend. Please remember Steve and his family during their time of need. Steve is very ill and is currently in the hospital. Also, remember Lamont while he is having some medical tests.

Thanks once again for your support. We can't wait to begin our trip.
